University vs colllege vs taking a gap year

  • The University /College Registration Rush VS Gap year

So it’s the beginning of a new year and everyone including people you don’t know are excited for one reason or another.
Either they are starting a new grade at school, going into their final year of school, going to tertiary or FET colleges or starting a new Job whether you like it or not it’s the beginning of a new year, but it seems like history is repeating itself year in year out when it comes to students applying for further learning.
Now are all told in high school that the only way to be successful in this country is to go to university get a degree and get a job?
Well then if that’s the case why are we sitting with people who are highly educated and cannot get a job, who wake up absorb air do house management and just sit around doing absolutely nothing cause they can’t find a job or they just took a course that they did not love cause it was the only one available and waste their parents hard earned money cause they are not copping and they are performing poorly academically.
The promoters, your teachers and friends paint this wonderful picture that oh yes the only way is university the grass is greener, there are daffodils and roses it’s a beautiful and rewarding goal to aim for when you leave school .Hence when you get towards the end of the year or beginning of the year you find parents with their kids rushing to register for university and they don’t care what course they take just as long as long as their kid is in university studying; heaven knows what. There are pros and cons , University gives you more opportunities and you get access to a lot of information , you have a social (aka party none stop )life , groups to join and so on the bad side however is if you cannot balance your academic and social life you are labeled as a geek or not cool enough to hang with the coolest cliques ,so either way something has got to give either you go there to get what you came for which is your degree or you go there to become the one who almost had it and fell from grace .It is the best option but it’s not the only option .

There is also another option which is college again just because you have a college education doesn’t mean that you are less of a student, it simply means you were smart enough to take the alternative rout which paid off in the end cause you didn’t stand out all day in the sun waiting for registration and you can also upgrade your diploma Via UNISA and you take the course you want it’s as simple as that. The down side however is you get students dropping out either because they are bored or think that they are wasting their time and money and they can get a much better education from varsity or they fail cause they make up for what they lacked socially in high school by being the party animal and M.R popularity. It aint bragging if you can back it up ,meaning if your book smart and party smart you can balance both your social and academic life and complete college.

The last option is a gap year which in my opinion is the best thing you can do for yourself. You can gain some exposure and experience in the work place and get to know yourself better as a person and you can call it taking a step towards your dream goal. See underneath all that advertising and promotion about life after school and “freedom”, what they don’t tell you is that you have to have a strong sense of self and stand your ground , yes you can go with the flow , why the hell not become another whole sale product or you can choose to be different and be you, if they don’t like you don’t change yourself you are who you are and that’s what makes you unique and special if anyone has a problem with that , it is theirs don’t make it yours .
So all in all whatever you decide to do don’t pretend, be someone you’re not, copy someone else and go with the flow. Be a trend setter and have fun life is educational learn from it and grow.
